Here’s a trick we’ve used as a time management tool in our classroom. It’s called the Comment Garden and it’s a great way to honor your students’ need to share without losing valuable teaching time due to unwieldy tangents.
Each student is given a flower with their name on it. When they have a comment, but you don’t have time for sideline discussions, kindly ask them to “plant” it the Comment Garden. They place their flower in a pot and return to their seats. At the end of the day, make time to ‘pick’ comments, allowing each student in the garden to have their say. And yes, you guessed it, most don’t remember!
