The Comprehension Race is engaging, simple for the teacher, and gets the kids moving around while working on comprehension skills. The Comprehension race also integrates Social Studies with Reading.
-Reading Passage (Appropriate for 3rd-5th graders)
-10 Question Cards
-5 Different Game Boards
-Comprehension Task Cards
(Please check the preview to see additional photos!)
Print a class set of the reading passage, the comprehension task cards (front to back, 1-5 on front and 6-10 on back), ONE of each question card (can laminate these if you would like), and a game board for each child. Note: There are five different game boards included in order to stagger the children on the question cards. I would copy 5 of each game board.
Place the question cards around the room (I post mine on the wall but they can be laid at tables or in chairs.)
How to Play:
The students will each read the passage and color in the START circle of their game board. After reading the passage, they will go to the first number listed on their game board. Once that question is answered, they will color it in on their game board. Using their task card, they will answer the questions in the order of their game board then color in those game board places as well. The students will color in the FINISH circle once they are done with all of the questions.
After all answers are complete, the students will either self-check using the answer key or turn it into the teacher.
The first five students to complete The Comprehension Race (with the correct answers) are the winners!
