The Concept of Authority Productivity Worksheet Teacher Notes
♫ Teachers: Save your time and save your voice with this handout! Have the students read each step in the process from the list out loud and then clarify each one.
♪ About seven years into teaching middle school chorus, there was a huge drama scene in my classroom over behavior, and the epiphany that I had was earth shattering: I cannot make my students behave.
♪ The sequence of events that followed helped me in my quest to manage my classroom optimally.
♪ Every year at the beginning of the year, after introducing my teaching signals, I would make a speech that included two important questions:
WHOSE JOB IS IT TO TEACH YOU TO BEHAVE?
WHOSE JOB IS IT TO MAKE YOU BEHAVE?
♪ I would then continue with a discussion of how many years they had been in school, and the fact that they knew how to behave. They had been in many classrooms along the way, and if they were not behaving, it was because they were either testing my boundaries, trying to yank my chain, or push my buttons. (provoking me)
♪ I was reminded of my main weapon of authority: the Code of Conduct. I was to know it inside and out, and use the language from it.
♪ After analyzing the most common disruptions, I refined my Classroom Management Plan, Class Rules and Time Out Document.
♪ Then I was referred to a book entitled “Setting Limits in the Classroom” which helped me tremendously.
♪ You will notice in my store that I have created many Classroom Management worksheets.
♪ Teaching middle school chorus took brains, determination, perseverance, tough skin, self-control, and true grit.
♪ Over the years I developed a plan that worked for me. I had to make many parent phone calls and FOLLOW THRU with my plan in every instance.
♪ It took time, but my perseverance paid off. Maybe this worksheet will be helpful to you and your students.
♪ This is great for chorus class, since this is the only class in school where students use their voice the entire period!
