This three page Active Inspire Flipchart is designed demonstrate how the competing Virginia and New Jersey Plans combined to create the Great Compromise that formed the basis for our Constitution.
After students have done the required reading they can copy the graphic organizer on the first page of the activity on to a piece of paper, or the teacher can print the first page as a handout. Then students are to copy the six phrases below into the appropriate boxes (either Virgina or New Jersey plans only, to start). (5 to 10 minutes)
The activity on the second page involves students by asking them to "pull a rabbit from a hat" or more properly pull a phrase out from behind the image of the constitution, and then place it in the correct box (again Virginia or New Jersey only). This part of the lesson would ideally be completed by students coming up to the board with their paper that contains the answers they wrote down from the first slide. (5 minutes)
Finally the third page involves moving four of the six details into the center box, there by demonstrating the student's knowledge of how the two plans created the Great Compromise. This slide also doubles as answer key for the first two slides. Through hidden text attached to each phrase it is easy to check your answers once you move them outside of their original box! (5-10 Minutes depending on instruction)
