Use this product when introducing your students to Robert Lipsyte's novel, The Contender. Choose to tell students the name of the novel, or leave it a complete mystery for them to figure out.
For this anticipation activity, you will choose 3-5 of the 8 supplied images to share with students. Print them out and place them in a box, bag, or envelope. Build anticipation for the novel by telling students you will show them some items that are significant to the novel the class is about to read. They will have to determine why these items are significant to the novel and write a short response (recommended paragraph) tying the different items together as they make predictions about the novel.
This is a great anticipation activity to use as you introduce the Contender. It stretches student's critical thinking skills and gives them practice with succinctly expressing their thinking while building engagement. You'll be amazed how previewing key symbols prior to reading will lead students to observe and discuss these symbols throughout your reading!
