The Contraction Contraption will have your students begging to do word work! There’s something so magical about sliding two words into one side of the machine and having the contraction come out the other side. (or vice versa!)
This file can be done whole group, but after modeling how to do one page, it would also work really well as a small-group literacy center rotation, such as the Work on Words component of Daily 5, with students doing one page each day.
There are also accompanying printables to hold everyone accountable, including a generic template in case you don’t want to use some of the harder contraction with younger students.
There are a total of 60 contractions, ranging from the very common ones, to less-common ones. You can delete any that you do not want to use.
NOTE: Now, even if you don’t have a SMARTBoard, you can still use this file!
Thanks to the free web-based Smart Notebook Express
, anyone can view and interact with Smart notebook files on other types of interactive white boards. The page display will be smaller than with SMART notebook, but the interactive elements work. Download the preview to see how it looks. (Most of the elements in the preview file are only screen shots, so the resolution is not as high as the actual file, but there is an example contraction to try.)
