The definitions of the vocal words are specific to the context of how the words are used in The Corn Raid and are written so English Language Learners at an intermediate level of language proficiency and higher can understand them. There are 4 words for every chapter except the first chapter, which has 8 words.

There are 2 templates for doing vocabulary work that are slightly different from each other. You can choose which one you prefer and use it as a model for students. A blank template is provided which you can photocopy for students or have students copy into their vocabulary journals. Students can use the templates to help them learn the vocabulary words by writing their own definitions or listing synonyms and antonyms, drawing pictures to illustrate the words, and using the words in sentences.

To give your students more practice in using the words, materials for playing Charades and Concentration (a matching game) are provided. Detailed instructions for playing the games are included.

There are 4 word search puzzles, with answer keys, that incorporate all the vocabulary words; each puzzle covers the vocabulary words in 2 - 4 chapters. There are also 4 crossword puzzles, with answer keys, that cover the same chapters as the word searches. For the crossword puzzles, the definitions of the words are the clues and the answers to be written in the puzzle boxes are the vocabulary words.
