Materials for a Pre-reading Cooperative Group Activity – In this activity, students rotate to 5 stations in which they will obtain background knowledge on key concepts necessary for understanding and appreciating The Count of Monte Cristo. Concepts are: background on The French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte, Alexandre Dumas, The Effects of Revenge, and Romanticism). After absorbing the information provided, students select a higher order thinking question slip at random (each station has 4 HOT questions which allow students to respond to the information on a deeper, more meaningful way). Reflection slips are glued to a response sheet or on the blank page in their Interactive Notebooks and discussed as a group though responses are individual. I have included the PowerPoint presentation for this activity. This presentation includes working timers and slides which discuss various elements of IB (International Baccalaureate). These slides can easily be removed if that foundation does not apply to your school.
NOTE: I used this structure for this activity for several Compass Evaluations and received a Highly Effective each time.
