Students always enjoy the film, The Count of Monte Cristo. It is a swashbuckling tale of adventure, betrayal and revenge. It's also a fabulous film to use to teach Characterization & Plot, including: initial incident, rising action, turning point and resolution. The 2002 version stars Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce and Richard Harris--the acting is stunning and accomplished.

The resource includes:

1. Handout on Plot Arc and Characterization--place mat/graphic organizer to complete while viewing

2. Test--asking students to show understanding of literary terms in relation to the story

Notes for the Teacher:
-The place mat /graphic organizer should be on the students' desk, while they are viewing
-pause while viewing to highlight key ideas from the handout (note initiating incident, identify static characters etc.)
-help students develop plot vocabulary and relate to the ideas in the film

-the Test is designed to guarantee good results from students
-if the graphic organizer is complete, then students have built capacity to perform well on the test
