EXPLORE THE CRASH OF 1929 LIKE NEVER BEFORE

Even seasoned teachers might be surprised at some of the real-life stories brought to life in the video that goes with these worksheets. Did you know that in between shooting movie scenes, Groucho Marx was making frantic phone calls to his stock broker? Tidbits like that make this episode of "American Experience" really engaging for the students as they learn about the heyday of the Roaring Twenties and the causes of the crash that ended a decade of prosperity.

These Crash of 1929 worksheets and puzzles will help students stay on task and track important details as they watch the video, or they can double as a test given afterwards to assess how much of the information the students have mastered.

ABOUT THESE STOCK MARKET CRASH OF 1929 WORKSHEETS AND PUZZLES

Because I firmly believe that teachers need lots of options to fit their students’ needs as well as their own instructional styles, I’ve included a lot of different components in this Crash of 1929 Worksheet Set:

• True/False Worksheet with 19 problems in video order.
• Multiple Choice Worksheet with 31 problems in video order.
• “Combo” worksheet with all 50 problems above presented in video order.
• Advanced-level crossword puzzle (Labeled Crossword A)
• Advanced-level crossword with word bank for differentiation
• Basic-level crossword puzzle (Labeled Crossword B)
• Basic-level crossword with word bank for further differentiation
• Answer keys for all worksheets
• Annotated answer keys for True/False problems
• Solution grids for all crossword puzzles
• Vocabulary lists for all crossword puzzles

With all that to choose from, it will be a snap for teachers to use some components as worksheets, others as reinforcement/reteaching activities, and still others as tests, making this packet a complete instruction & assessment solution for use with American Experience: The Crash of 1929!

TEACHER CONVENIENCE FEATURES INCLUDED IN THIS CRASH OF 1929 WORKSHEET AND TEST PACKET

All question worksheets present student problems in “video order” so that students can easily complete the worksheets as they watch American Experience: The Crash of 1929.

All student worksheets are offered here in two formats: consumable and reusable. The latter option allows teachers to spend less time copying since they can make one class set that can be used all day long and/or across multiple years. If you prefer to allow students to write directly on the worksheets, however, a consumable version with answer blanks is provided as well.

There are also two answer keys: one designed for fast correcting and one intended to facilitate discussion as it includes commentary on a number of answers such as the false answers in the true/false problems.

The crossword puzzles also include two answer keys: a traditional filled-in grid, and a vocabulary list that can be helpful when reviewing terms and clues with the class.

SAMPLE LESSON PLANS FOR THIS AMERICAN EXPERIENCE CRASH OF 1929 WORKSHEET AND PUZZLE PACKET

• Show the video and have students use the Multiple Choice worksheet while they view it. The next day, go over the correct answers, using them as a vehicle for review and discussion. Afterwards, assign the True/False worksheet for reinforcement homework, or use it as an assessment. Use the crossword puzzles for further review and reinforcement as needed.
• Show the video and have students take notes while watching. Afterwards, have students complete the Advanced or Basic crossword puzzle using their notes. Then assign the True/False or Multiple Choice worksheet as an open-note assessment or homework assignment.
• Show the video and have students complete the full 50-question worksheet as they view. Have students work on the Advanced crossword puzzle in teams or pairs. Review answers together and tell students to study the clues and terms thoroughly. The next day, give students the Basic crossword puzzle as a quiz or test. All of the items on the Basic crossword puzzle are also on the Advanced puzzle, which makes this strategy a great way to measure who was paying attention to the clues/terms reviewed the day before!
• Show the video and have students complete the full 50-question worksheet. Review answers thoroughly and tell students to study them. The next day, present students with a test consisting of either the True/False or the Multiple Choice worksheet.
• Show the video and use one of the viewing worksheets. Reserve the crossword puzzles for a review day later, such as when you need to write a substitute lesson plan.
• I am sure that many more permutations are possible. The materials are flexible and I would welcome your remarks about your own creative ways to use them!

ABOUT THE VIDEO: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE -- THE CRASH OF 1929

These teaching packet is designed to accompany "The Crash of 1929," an episode of the award-winning PBS series American Experience. The episode lasts approximately 53 minutes, making it a near-perfect “fit” for one class period at a typical secondary school. However, the episode can be easily broken out into segments if teachers prefer to show the program over more than one day.

THE VIDEO'S GREAT... WHERE CAN I FIND IT?

The fastest and easiest way to find the program online is to run a simple Google search. Depending on availability, you may also see it on the official PBS website or on Netflix in addition to a number of other sites.

Teachers who would like to purchase a copy on DVD should look on sites like Amazon or eBay – since these outlets often offer used copies of DVDs, this is the most affordable option. New copies of most American Experience episodes are usually available from www.pbs.org. A final option is to closely watch your local PBS station for American Experience broadcast times since the Crash of 1929 episode does sometimes replay.

I hope that these Crash of 1929 Worksheets, which of course can double as a Crash of 1929 Test, fit right into your 1920's lesson sequence, helping to make it more engaging and enjoyable for your students!
