"The Crisis": Common Core
This is a unit on persuasive speech using Paine's speech from "The American Crisis, The Crisis, No. 1" as the anchor text.
The text is 6 pages and formatted into two columns for easier reading. I have added footnotes to aid with archaic vocabulary, as well as to explain historical aspects in the text.
The reading questions are composed of 10 true-false questions, 5 multiple-choice questions, and 5 statements from the text that the reader has to identify the type of argument: appeal to reason or emotion. The questions are 2 pages.
The answer key is also 2 pages.
The text, questions, and answer key all come in Word, as well as in PDF. Therefore, there are 20 pages total.
I use this unit as part of my Revolutionary Period of literature, and I also use it to introduce persuasive writing. I use it in conjunction with another persuasive text from the Revolutionary Period: "Speech to the Virginia Convention," by Patrick Henry.
I also have Henry's speech unit for sale in my store.
After this unit, I have students write a persuasive essay. You could use it as a mini unit or you could incorporate it into a larger unit.
The assessment is Common Core aligned.
