Product Description
I created this resource as a way to facilitate higher-order thinking and reading skills for my British-Literature-favorite, Beowulf. My students enjoy this epic story for its actions and conflict, so I created this unit to engage their thinking beyond conventional study guides that rarely provide thinking beyond comprehension. The critical theories analyses not only engage students in analyzing, connecting, criticizing, and applying, but they also work great as in-class lessons; research, writing, and discussion practice; and higher-order formative assessments leading to a culminating higher-order fully editable summative assessment. (Please note the summative and text-based multiple choice practice assessment are the only editable components in this unit.)

This unit works great with my British Literature and AP Literature and Composition classes!

Here is a list of the included items:

Contextual Vocabulary Study:
The unit includes five contextual vocabulary words with a Q & A section to empower students to connect the meanings of these words to new contexts. Not only does the Q & A provide a great means for discussion, it also helps students go beyond memorizing definitions. They will be challenged to learn the word as a concept and apply the word to different contexts in both the Q & A practice and the exam.

Guided Reading Questions:
The guided reading questions are based on the translation in our textbook by Burton Raffel. They can be left out or used partially if your textbook or version only includes some selections from Beowulf. The pages are divided by sections: 1) The Monster Grendel, 2) Unferth’s Challenge, 3) The Battle with Grendel and The Monster’s Mother, and 4) The Final Battle. There are twenty questions in all. These guides can be given as a group or distributed individually for each section. They are designed to supplement reading for formative assessment to check for comprehension.

Critical Theories Analysis:
There are five perspective analyses that accompany this critical thinking study: Formalist (word study and twenty guided reading questions), Reader Response, Historical and Cultural, Archetypal, and Deconstruction. These formative assessments provide students with opportunities to write, discuss, role play, and research the work from multiple perspectives.

Summative Assessment:
An editable quiz is included as both a Word Document and a Google Form. It includes ten critical reading questions fully aligned with the analyses in the unit, five context-based vocabulary multiple choice questions, and one open-ended question aligned with the critical analysis study. An answer key and explanations for each question are included.

Text-Based Multiple Choice Assessment:
An editable text-based analysis multiple choice quiz is included in this unit in addition to the summative assessment. For this quiz, students read an excerpt from Beowulf’s battle with Breca and answer AP-style text-based questions. This can be used as a pacing exercise, a pre-assessment quiz, stand-alone multiple choice practice, or additional questions to add to the summative assessment.

Suggested Answer Key:
The unit includes suggested answers or example answers for each question, prompt, or task in the unit. Suggested answers are answers for which a given answer applies. Example answers are answers for questions that could be interpreted differently based on the reader.

Unit Guide:
An example unit guide is included to help you with scope and sequence while planning your unit. It is based on a 50-minute period. Please note that this is just a guide, and it should be adapted to best suit your class and your objectives. On the guide, you will find detailed notes for setting up, organizing, planning, and teaching your unit.
