WHAT IS IT?
The Critical Reader's Guide to Literary Theory is a resource that is the result of my three-year dissertation study. This versatile resource has components for students and teachers so it can be used in a variety of ways to encourage higher-order thinking and reading skills based on multiple perspectives. The resource uses a checklist to determine which literary theories can be used to analyze any text. Once complete, the checklist corresponds with a page of the literary theory flipbook for students. Also, for teachers, the checklist corresponds to a teacher’s guide.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Teachers can use the source to determine which literary theories can be used to analyze a work as a whole class model. For the teacher, each literary theory includes the historical background, explanations, and strategies for teaching each theory. For students, the resource includes a theory flipbook that includes background on the theory, an overview of the task for each theory, further research topics, and a short assignment for completing an analysis of the work and theory cards that include tasks, tips, and further research topics.

WHY DOES IT WORK?
A review of related literature reveals the importance of teaching students multiple perspectives. Using this research as a theoretical context, I developed the resource, field tested it with secondary English teachers, analyzed the results, and updated the resources to reflect the results of the study. In all, the results of my dissertation indicated that the resource was an effective tool to encourage higher-order thinking skills, engage students with independent learning, and teach students multiple perspectives through literary theory.
