The Crossover STEM Extension Guide is created to be a supplemental STEM guide for a classroom study of the book The Crossover by Kwame Alexander. This guide is designed to be used by a reading/language arts teacher to facilitate the inclusion of STEM standards in a reading/language arts classroom. The guide can also be used by science teachers who would like to partner with reading/language arts teachers to create a cross-curricular unit. Included in this guide are three non-fiction reading passages with comprehension questions that compliment the novel. Each non-fiction reading passage is also paired with a non-fiction reading skills worksheet. The worksheets can be used independently of the passages with which they are paired. The guide includes one mini-lab activity and one full lab activity. Both labs are designed to be accessible to a reading/language arts teacher and use basic supplies. The lab experiences will enhance the student’s understanding of the book and allow students to use a different learning style than is typically used in a reading/language arts classroom.
REQUIRED SUPPLIES FOR THE LAB EXPERIENCES:
Tennis ball (at least one)
Timer (at least one)
