The Crossover by Kwame Alexander won the Newbery Award in 2015. This is a story that is sure to engage even your most reluctant upper elementary reader. The text is combines basketball and poetry but is sure to appeal to a wide variety of readers in your class. My fifth grade students LOVED the free verse, particularly Josh's inner monologues as he played basketball.
