Included is a two-part assignment as students begin to read Act One of "The Crucible."
Part One is a PowerPoint with directions to a Character Explication assignment, where students get into small groups and create a poster focused on a character (6 options included) from Act 1 that they are assigned. After having 1-2 days to create the posters, students give presentations to the class. This requires poster paper, or construction paper, and be modified to become a digital assignment where students create a Google Slide to present.
Also included is a handout where students examine the character traits, relationships, and purpose of each character done in the presentations (and two more to do on their own). This can be printed as a handout or uploaded as a digital assignment.
Because Arthur Miller stops the play several times to give background information, I structure this assignment as a jigsaw activity where students become experts on a particular character and then teach the rest of the class important traits of that character. This helps now slow the class down when reading the play, and acts as a study guide to better understand Act One.
