Students make connections between Hiss's actions and the actions of a character from Miller's play The Crucible. Many students write a response based on Mary Warren or John Proctor, but I always encourage students to think outside the box and use characters that don't seem very obvious.
Option A: (Independent)
1. After reading the play, or perhaps a specific portion of the play, students actively read the article.
2. Students write a response that conveys a connection between Hiss and a character from the play. (You can have students compare, contrast, or compare and contrast.)
Option B: (Entire Class)
1. After reading the play, or perhaps a specific portion of the play, the teacher, or selected students, read the article aloud.
2. Discuss students' opinions of Snowden.
3. Identify as a class, or the teacher can provide, one character who acts similar to and/or different from Hiss.
Option C: (Small Groups)
1. After reading the play, or perhaps a specific portion of the play, the students read the article in their assigned small groups.
2. The teacher can provide each group with a different character or the groups can decide on a character to identify ways in which the character is similar to and/or different from Hiss.
3. Each group presents the work to the class.
