Arthur Miller's play The Crucible is rich literature perfect for studying theme. In this post-reading activity, students work individually, then in small groups to complete a "Target Diagram" graphic organizer which helps them develop themes from this classic play. Students use the techniques of reading on the line, reading between the lines, and reading BEYOND the lines to come up with some themes. Students make an individual target organizer, then work with a small group to come to some consensus the next day and create a target diagram poster. Teacher's notes are included, as well as a direction sheet for your students, a model from another work of literature, and a blank template. Using this activity, you'll have your students right on target when it comes to theme!
