When we read The Crucible, we talk about being involved in making changes. The Phil Ochs song goes along with the article about Kitty Genovese, "The dying girl that no one helped," that details the overtly witnessed death of a young girl. I break the students up into small groups to analyze the message of the lyrics alone, then we jigsaw them together. After, we listen to the song and talk about how the sound of the song highlights the message. We also brainstorms other songs that do the same, (ex: Pumped Up Kicks).
