Students read 2 primary sources on the Crusades under Richard the Lionhearted and King Louis IX against the Saracens and answer 20 questions of varying difficulty (17 between the two accounts and 3 compare and contrast and wrap up questions). An answer key is included where appropriate. This would be great for a sub!
Sample questions include:
--Why might "infidel" be in quotation marks?
--Inferring from the text and prior knowledge, why was being a port city important to Acre?
--Explain Beha-ed-Din's point of view in the first paragraph of "Slaughter in the Desert" in your own words to demonstrate understanding. Especially note the difference between his take on the course of events and Richard's.
--How might King Richard's actions affect future dealings with the Muslims?
--How might Joinville have felt when King Louis came to them in the midst of battle?
--Compare and contrast the treatment of hostages, deals, and ransoms between the Christians and Muslims in these two accounts. Why do you think there was a difference when all was said and done?
