PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The 32 questions in this packet are for use with the 1999 Tibetan film, The Cup, directed by Khyentse Norbu. The film’s plot revolves around a group of Tibetan monks in training at a monastery in exile in the Himalayas. Desperate to watch the 1998 World Cup soccer match, the boys struggle to secure the TV and satellite dish necessary to make this happen. The young monks’ passion for soccer is set against political tensions that complicate their Lama’s efforts to impart the word of Buddhist to his young charges.

Some of the questions are designed to assess plot comprehension; others are intended to hone critical thinking and writing skills. A few of the questions can also be used as prompts for longer writing assignments. The film raises some tough and complicated questions about family, friendship and religious persecution, and explores some of the ethical dilemmas that a life in exile can trigger. Some of the questions here ask students to articulate their thoughts on these issues.
