No pun intended, but I've decided to drop the price to $3.00 (pretty relevant with the economy and the bailout stimulus packages happening.)
This is a presentation I like to show my classes when discussing large numbers. With the VERY large stimulus packages being considered, $700+ billion can be unmanageable. However, I have created three scenarios regarding $700 billion in $100 dollar bills and try to put it in perspective. These include how long would $700 billion in $100 bills laid end to end stretch? How tall would it be stacked together? How much would it weigh? For each scenario, I used real numbers (distance to the International Space Station, number of garbage trucks, distance to the moon) to help reinforce the point. Finally I use the movie Ocean's 11 and see if it really is possible to steal $160 million in $100 bills.
I use an interactive whiteboard (Interwrite, like a SMART board) and TurningPoint clickers (Student Response Systems) but the powerpoint could be shown as-is and get the point across. I have added the equations on each slide using MathType but I would recommend removing them and instead having the students come up with the answers. I have also included all calculations in the bottom section of the slides (Notes section).
This is a great activity to stress how large of numbers we are discussing and can really help open up some eyes regarding the economy. Enjoy!
