Based on Robert Marion's article "Curse of the Garcias" from Discover Magazine, December 2000, this close read is intended for students in a high school level Biology course.
Students will explore the disorder of Imelda Garcia who consults a genetic counselor to find answers to questions posed by a familial trait. Androgen sensitivity disorder or testicular feminization is the result of a genetic code that results in deficient receptor protiens. Sex-linked traits, cultural norms, emigration, human embrionic development, hormones, endocrine and reproduction are discussed within the reading and assigned tasks. As an extension, students are asked to make inferences at an intrapersonal level.
