Students will read a brief informational text about how entanglements put marine organisms in danger of losing appendages, starving if blockages occur in their digestive tracts, drowning, and suffocation. This lesson is a wonderful pre-lab for a field trip to a beach clean-up!
A data table is included for students to record the types of fishing debris, packaging, and other common waste products found floating in the water and along the shoreline. Students then will draw a picture and include a catchy slogan about how to prevent marine debris.
Enrichment Activity: Students can research how tsunamis, hurricanes, and other natural disasters contribute to the marine debris found in the ocean.
