Product Description
THE DARK KNIGHT OF THE FLIES paper allows students to analyze the similar themes of Christopher Nolan's film THE DARK KNIGHT and William Golding's novel LORD OF THE FLIES. This roughly two-week project (not including homework time) ties a common reading assignment with a compelling, popular film to engage students and encourage deep thinking about pop culture as well as literature. It is designed to accommodate three days of in-class viewing, with students watching the first half on their own (or reading the screenplay, which is not included for copyright reasons, but is a mere Google search away, in searchable format at some links). Students choose to analyze either the theme of human nature (are we fundamentally good or evil?) or social order (can order prevail, or will chaos reign?). The ZIP file includes everything you need to run the unit, including:
—Assignment sheet
—Terminology sheet to aid in understanding the film's plot
—Notes pages for tracking the appearance of the themes in the novel and the film
—Inspirational questions to help students recognize moments in the film and novel that address the central questions
—Thesis planning sheet that helps students translate the evidence in the texts to a thesis statement about one of the two themes
—Body paragraph planning sheet that uses the MEL-CON approach
—Sample filled-in body paragraph sheet using a scene from TOY STORY for evidence
—Transitions Trove handout with appropriate transitions organized by context
—Essay organization handout using Opening ACTS/Closing STAC approach for introductions and conclusions
—ACTS-STAC planning sheet
—Elaborate, editable 50-point rubric
—Peer review sheet
—Packet cover sheet with editable summary of due dates
—Planning file with the recommended order of packet pages
—PowerPoints for textual support and ACTS-STAC (with examples)
