Have you noticed that your students don't know how to conduct searches using online databases? It was a big issue at my school, when I noticed my students trying to type questions into the database search boxes, instead of using keywords, so I developed this fun activity to give them practice. You can simply print it off and use as a worksheet for a center activity or a very simple substitute plan OR you can use it as a game your students will be excited to play!
To use as a game, students are paired up and work together to answer questions to see who can successfully complete the Database Detectives cards first. Students will identify the keyword(s) or subject of the question to identify the correct search term. Then they will use those keywords to conduct searches on World Book Online to find the answers to the questions on the Database Detective game cards. Your students will be learning the beginning steps of conducting research, reading authentic expository texts to find information, becoming familiar with online educational databases, and working cooperatively without even realizing it. After all, they are just playing a game!
