The Day After remains the most watched made for TV movie in US history. When it aired on ABC in 1983, at a time of incredible tension between the USSR and USA, over 100 million viewers watched this and the reaction was shock and fear. I've read that President Reagan saw it in the White House and this prompted him to negotiate an even more hard line with the USSR to end the Cold War as quickly as possible.
