This packet includes three comprehension activities, writing prompts, and a final assessment; all literacy center ready!
Vocabulary: page 2-4, These 12 words are the words from the COCA list >3000, there were no academic words in this book. I print, laminate, and cut the words from their definitions and the students practice matching the words to the correct definitions. A crossword puzzle for extra practice is included on page 4.
Story Retelling Strips: pages 5-7, After printing and laminating the 11 sentence strips I have students put them in a sequence that matches the book. Students can then use these sentences to retell the story.
Cause & Effect Chain: pages 8-13, I print, laminate, and cut the 22 cards ahead of time. Students then use the cards to create a cause and effect chain of events. This is challenging because the story relates the chain in somewhat of a reverse order and the chain actually branches off into side chains towards the end for two different final effects. The students need to start with Jimmy deciding to bring the snake to the farm and go on from there. This activity can be accommodated for lower-level students by telling them to start with this card and by eliminating the side chains. Page 12 is a flowchart that students can use to track the various causes and effects. This is a very difficult task as there are multiple tracks to be followed and the events are not related in sequence in the story. Page 13 is an accommodated flow chart. Page 14-15 are the answer keys.
Literature Response Choice: page 16-18, I use these cards in my literacy center. I print, laminate and post them in the center. Students then choose one question to respond to on the provided stationary.
Comprehension question cards: page 19-22, I print, laminate, and cut the cards (I make one set for each table group or place a single set in my literacy center). Students record their answers on the provided sheet (pg. 18) and the answer key follows on page 19.
