Language Activities to supplement Drew Daywalt’s very creative story, The Day the Crayons Quit

CATEGORIES:
~Sort 48 pictures between the following twelve categories: in a box/write with; school supply/animal; large/small; color/letter; happy/sad; yellow/orange
~Use sorting mat to sort items between two or four categories
~Can make a book or poster using any or all of the categories and items
~Sort pictures into categories by color: each color page has four boxes to select items and color them to match

I HAVE...WHO HAS:
~Color ID: Playing the game, students identify 11 colors using color name and visual crayon cue
~ Object color: Playing the turn taking game, students match items to one of 11 colors

FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS:
~One step directions: 45 cards to follow one step directions of pretend play and actions
~ Complex directions: Use supplemental cards (before, after, first, then) to create more complex directions; Differentiate by combining cards to increase complexity to 2, 3, or 4 step directions

OPINIONS & LETTER:
~Student can write a "Please Don’t Quit” letter to a crayon using the template
~Using color and feelings vocabulary, students express to each crayon why they are needed. Word bank is included.
~Color of the sun opinion letter: Using templates and structured support, students explain their support of the yellow or orange crayon. (three formats to differentiate based on support needed)

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS & STRATEGY CARDS:
~Essential questions: 9 essential questions to use in a pocket chart, as magnets on the board, or as a part of a ticket in/ ticket out system
~Strategy Cards: Visual cue cards to help teach strategies of following directions and classification (two formats to choose from)
~Vocabulary Cards: 12 Visual cue cards to help teach common vocabulary utilized in this story and attached lessons
