This is a fun and thought-provoking lesson that can be used before or after teaching a science lesson on the seasons, the length and cause of days and years, Earth’s rotation and Earth’s orbit around the Sun. It uses the idea of a ‘thought experiment’ as pioneered by Galileo and later used by Albert Einstein. The lesson was inspired by the recent best-seller ‘What If?’ by Randall Munroe.
It contains links to an article from the book and a YouTube video that students can use to help build their understanding. This is a creative and deep lesson with a number of layers to it. It lets students explore and has a variety of extensions that can lead students to new areas of understanding.
It allows students to learn some new facts, brainstorm with their partners, and to have fun drawing pictures of hypothetical situations! Kids love drawing the Earth stopping and what it might do to nature.
