A few years ago, I had a conversation with students that led me to realize that many of them lack a basic understanding of the concept of a decimal (ie. it works like a fraction- it is less than one, or part of a whole).
That led to me working this song into my math program. It is simple and catchy and hammers the point home, so that they won't (can't!) forget it. I used it as an introduction into decimals because it pumps up a unit that can otherwise get a bit dry.
The tune is to the Banana Boat Song (Day-O) and it is a fairly involved lesson. The results are awesome though, and if you prepare it thoroughly, you can accomplish the whole thing in one period. The students really (and I mean really) have a ridiculously good time with it.
**Warning- you have to be comfortable acting a little bit goofy in front of your students. If you are overly shy, this isn't for you***
This package contains everything you need to put together a mini-class performance. It contains a list of things you can do to prepare, a student handout, a teacher handout, and a list of tips, actions, etc. to make this truly fun.
You will not find any sound recordings in here. This is a lesson meant to engage and involve your kids, not to sit back and watch!
While this lesson will take up a lot of your energy (bring coffee), I absolutely promise the results are worth it- Every single child I've ever used it with has enjoyed it. Trust me- I ask them!
