This package starts with one succinct page of background information essential for understanding the historical context in which The Declaration was written. Following the page of background notes, you'll find a series of questions about The Declaration, followed by an answer key. In order to answer some of these questions, your students will have to refer to the page of background notes, using them to analyze, draw conclusions, explain, and/or evaluate. In short, this assignment is designed to challenge your students to think: to draw a connection between what they know about a historical time period (thanks to the page of notes) and an iconic document from American history.
In part because the assignment asks students to consider The Declaration's content, basic structure, and tone--its rhetorical strategy--this assignment works well in any honors level American Lit or American History class as well as being perfectly suited for the type of work required in an AP English Language or AP American History class. In that sense, it's also an ideal cross-curricular assignment.
