Product Description
Introduce students to the beautiful rhetoric of the Declaration of Independence.

Based on an article by Stephen Lucas which is included in this packet, this presentation introduces students to The Declaration of Independence as a masterly piece of rhetoric and literature.

I have the Declaration highlighted in the presentation which can be projected on a white board or pushed out to students' devices.

The students have a skeletal outline to fill in, and I provide a teacher key for the skeletal outline.

The lesson covers:

--diction
--literary and rhetorical techniques used by Jefferson and others
--discussion of rhythm and cadence, discussion of other strategies.

I've also included an activity where students partner up and create their own declaration of independence from homework, siblings, procrastination, etc.

This includes a grading rubric.

After receiving feedback that the resource is a bit overwhelming, I've added this Table of Contents:

TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR THIS RESOURCE:

• pp. 1-16: These pages are the document to provide for students.
 You might choose to:
o color print (distinguish the highlighting)
o push out to students’ devices (iPad, phone, etc.)
o project on white board or screen (my preferred method)

• pp. 17-32: These are pages of notes to guide students through the
document and elaborate on the highlighted words, phrases or sections.

• p. 33: This is a section of Lucas’s article about the “drama” that the
declaration creates. I have students read it independently or we read it aloud and discuss the author’s observations.

• p. 34: Collaborative Activity/Rubric for students to complete.

• p. 46: The same article excerpt about drama, attached to student handout

• p. 47-59: The article, “The Stylistic Artistry of the Declaration of
Independence” by Stephen E. Lucas from which I gleaned the information. I re-read it before my presentation so that I’m familiar with the content and can respond better to student reactions and questions.

This is a fabulous lesson that I use for Honors Juniors in American literature class.

Also available in my store is a PowerPoint that presents the same information with vibrant and engaging graphics. Click below to check out that resource:
