This packet will...
>teach students HOW to add descriptive details to their writing.
>teach students HOW to organize their writing.
>save the teacher HOURS of preparation time
>save the teacher HOURS of grading time because each assignment is a compact one-paragraph, one-page assignment
This packet includes...
>24 READY-TO-USE, high-interest writing assignments for grades 5, 6, 7, or 8.
>a 1st set of 12 assignments for grades 5 or 6 that focus on topic and concluding sentences, transitions, adjectives, and figurative language.
>a 2nd set of 12 assignments for grades 7 or 8 that build on the previous skills, but add the use of adverbs and 5 types of sentence variety.
>point values for each assignment (25 pts.) (1 pt. for typing the Keys to Success on the paper and 24 pts. for including the Keys in the paragraph).
IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT...
>point values can, of course, be changed or totally eliminated based on the needs of the teacher.
>correct Word usage, Spelling,Punctuation, and Capitalization is abbreviated as WSPC on each assignment. Since students ALWAYS need to be cognizant of these when turning in FINAL drafts, each assignment is set up so the teacher can deduct up to 5 points for careless use of the these skills.
>Do the first couple assignments in class so the students are clear on the expectations. After that, the assignments can certainly be used for homework.
>Of course, REMIND students to save their typed work! Then when they receive a paper back with corrections to be made, it is not as much work for them!
>Revised papers should ALWAYS be stapled to the front of the previous paper so the teacher knows what revisions have been made and it is not as much work for YOU!
>YES, students who work to make the proper corrections can earn top points! They are rewarded for their revision efforts.
>YES, students can also be told that there will be no revision opportunities. The first paper that is turned in CAN be the grade that stands. Students can improve on the NEXT assignment after further classroom teaching and practice has occurred.
I have used the Detail Shop assignments with great success for many years with 6th and 7th graders. Though the assignments are only one paragraph long, the Keys for Success (skills) required for each paragraph make it a challenge for any student. (Of course, the Keys can be adjusted to differentiate for certain students.)
