This is a common core-based lesson focusing on the work of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in The Communist Manifesto. This lesson follows an introductory lesson on capitalism and socialism during the Industrial Revolution unit. First, students spend 15 minutes reviewing from the previous lesson. I have found that students typically struggle with the economic theories of the Industrial age so review here is critically important. Then students will focus on four quotes from The Communist Manifesto and translate them in groups. In those same groups, students will discuss whether they agree or disagree with each statement. Whole class discussion follows. Typically students leave class with a clear understanding of communism. The next day I would give a quiz and then briefly review all three economic theories - capitalism, socialism, and communism.
