This is a great activity for students to work in literary circles of 2-4 reading "The Devil & Tom Walker". Students should read the story aloud in their small groups, "popcorn-ing" between each other as they go & stopping to discuss plot & unknown vocabulary. After reading, each student should get one page of the handout found here.
The handouts ask students to identify literary devices, plot elements, direct and indirect characterization, and to define uknown words. Once students are familiar with the structure of this literary circle activity, it can be modified to be used on short stories and excerpts throughout the year.
