Washington Irving's classic short story "The Devil and Tom Walker" is a folk tale, a Faust legend, and an example of Romanticism--Wow! That's a lot of labels! Get your students delving in to the text of this story as they closely examine how the story is an example of each of these types of literature. For example, students will dissect a folk tale into its elements and investigate how this story relates. In addition, students will work to decode some of the extensive symbolism and satire used in the story. Have your students work individually or in small groups to complete this post-reading activity. Included is a completed activity with model student responses.
