As we all know, students do not all finish their reading or assignments simultaneously. As a result, we can have students sitting and doing nothing productive. For those moments during my unit on the Age of Reason, for which The Devil in the White City is my extended text, I have students choose a task card from the stack. After they finish their reading, other assignments, quizzes, or tests, students work on their tasks. I usually give them a few days to work on the tasks before they are due; however, they know they must sometimes work on these as homework if they won't finish in class.
