Product Description

The science of classifying of living things is called taxonomy. Organisms are classified into seven primary groups: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species.

Use this supplementary resource for your curriculum as an introduction to the classification system. Therefore, please, note that this system is not the actual dichotomous key for identifying corals, used by the scientists, but it is created on the basic principle of unique categories at each level of organization with the language and basic characteristics that students can observe, just by looking at the illustration.

Before attempting to use the dichotomous key to identify the corals, students should be familiar with the basic concept of what a coral is and what are the main types of the corals (hard corals and soft corals). Therefore, hand out the reading passage and reading comprehension worksheet to refresh the knowledge (included).

The ZIP file includes the teacher's guide and the student's worksheets.

The teacher's guide is an interactive PPT that could be used as a visual guide for using the worksheets in the classroom. It guides how to identify all nine species of corals - hard corals (star coral, staghorn coral, brain coral, black coral, and sun coral), and soft corals (sea fan, toadstool coral, sea whip, and blue coral).

No preparation needed. Simple print, make the copies and hand out the worksheets to your students. Have fun!
