Some of my first grade students struggled identifying the graphemes 'b' and 'd.' Out of all the letter of the alphabet these two seem to be the trickiest since they really are the same shape only reflected vertically.
I searched the web for something to help my students and the only advice I found was to tell students that, "b looks at d." OK, that was a start, but I really wanted to drive that message home. I ended up writing my own short story with lively characters, decodable vocabulary, and a solid message to help my students remember why 'b' looks at 'd.'
My students loved my story and had lots of fun with my extension activity. The vocabulary used in this book includes many Fry sight words, so even my lowest readers felt proud that they could read many of the words.
I hope your students will find it as helpful as mine did.
