Students will learn three root word parts for biological terms that go along with the Digestive System Unit. Knowledge of the root word parts will enable students to decode meaning from new and unfamiliar terms. Students can apply the strategy that they use from this type of activity to decipher unfamiliar words and obtain meaning from new vocabulary. Because all teachers became responsible for reading and literacy with the implementation of the Common Core Curriculum standards, this activity will enable teachers to help students decipher words that may be difficult and intimidating. This activity would complement a Biology or Life Science classroom well. Two different versions of the work have been included. One version includes visual aids and the other does not. Cards with the visuals on them have been included which can hang in the classroom. Answer keys of both versions are also included.
