The Distributive Property and Combining Like Terms
Before teaching how to solve equations in Algebra, I think it is important that students become familiar with the distributive property and combining like terms in expressions before they can use that skill in equations.
This worksheet has 20 practice problems for using the distributive property on one page, and 22 practice problems for combining like terms on the second page (including 7 problems where the students have to distribute first and then combine like terms).
I use this first, then move on to solving one step equations, then solving two step equations and finally multi-step equations.
