This is a 15 page workbook to accompany the story "The Dog That Dug for Dinosaurs" by Shirley Raye Redmond. If you have used my Houghton Mifflin® story workbooks for the old reading program, you will love these! There are many common core language arts skills that are covered in this workbook, including: consonant clusters/digraphs, syllables, parts of speech, multiple meaning words, reference materials, verb tense, vocabulary, subject/predicate, ABC order, vowel sounds, prepositional phrases, sentence correction (spelling/grammar), dictionary skills, synonyms/antonyms, the verb "to be", sounds for G, genre, r-controlled vowels, author's purpose, writing skills, homophones, schwa sound, prefixes/suffixes, vowel teams, summarizing, short/long vowels, possessives, singular/plural nouns, pronouns, sequencing, context clues, compound words, making inferences/drawing conclusions, quotation and punctuation marks, contractions, main idea/details, fact/opinion, sorting/classifying, proper nouns, analogies, narrator, sentence types, and cause and effect. This workbook is an invaluable tool if you want to introduce skills early and review them many times so your students can achieve mastery.
The page numbers referenced in this workbook correspond to the story in the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt® Journeys California Reading program (2017). If you are using another version of "The Dog That Dug for Dinosaurs", this will still be useful to you, but you may have to modify a few things. If you like this product, check out my workbooks for other stories in the Journeys program.
I do not make answer keys for my workbooks because many questions are open ended, and also because I don't grade my students' work in these workbooks. We work on the pages together at the beginning of the year, then I slowly release them to do the work on their own and then we go over the answers together. If you have any questions about correct answers, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
