In this package, you will find for Louis Untermeyer’s classic tale ‘The Dog of Pompeii” forty-four close-reading questions (with a model written response), a read aloud review summary that is worthy of display, and a twenty-five objective-style reading assessment complete with answer key.
I like to read this story as a kickoff to a Character versus Nature unit. I follow with Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet and share the following two poems: Longfellow’s “The Wreck of the Hesperus” and Service’s “The Cremation of Sam McGee.”
To help you prepare for the shared reading of this story, you might also like to read the section on the eruption of Vesuvius in Robert Silverberg’s book Lost Cities and Vanished Civilizations.
