This is an exciting lab activity in which students take on the roles of CSIs working with evidence in the crime lab.
A real crime has been committed! Punkin the pooch has been dognapped! The only evidence is the ransom note, which IS included in this packet. Students will have to use chromatography to match the ink in suspects’ pens to the ink in the ransom note. They will use their data to isolate one suspect and write a report of their tests and results (conclusion).
Students will also have to evaluate and justify the validity of the process and the results in case they should be required to testify in court.
This lab is fun, yet relevant because students are solving a real-life problem.
Complete instructions and background information are provided for teachers. It is teacher friendly because it does not require special equipment or materials that are difficult to set up.
