I've used this worksheet for years with my 2nd graders, but value the message in the book as a message for students of all ages.
"The Dot," (for those who have not read it) is a book with a clear message- The first step is to try. We read the book together, have a discussion about the lesson presented in the book, and then I distribute the worksheet. We all make a dot at the same time, and from there, students can turn their dot into any creation.
It's amazing to see the diversity of their creations!
I then have each student "sign" the contract as a promise to always do their best and to always try.
I love this activity, because it really sets a great foundation for the year about trying and grit.
