It can be so challenging for art teachers to decide how they are going to greet their large number of students at the beginning of a school year. One of my favorite ways is with a collaborative art activity that every student in the school can participate in, such as this simple but meaningful activity based around the fan-favorite book, "The Dot." Students will each have the opportunity to "make their mark" and work together to create a vibrant piece of artwork that can become part of your classroom for years to come.
In this lesson plan, you will find recommended materials, a detailed plan for one class period of instruction, along with an example of what was created with my own classes. This lesson can be taught to each and every one of your classes at the beginning of school, or can be taught to one single homeroom if you are a traditional classroom teacher.
This lesson works best for kindergarten through fifth grade, though I have implemented it up to eighth grade in order to have full-school participation.
