How to use word sorts for secondary:
FRIDAY BEFORE: Laminate and have student assistants cut out cards.
MONDAY: Give students just the vocabulary terms and organize them in a way that makes sense to them, have them decide. (alphabetically, familiarity, good/bad words) Then have students present their arrangement.
TUESDAY: Let students work in groups to match the cards, check their work.
WEDNESDAY: Create a group competition where they try to match up their words the fastest. I like to divide up the cards for this, or even bring in past word sorts for students to review. Students rotate to different tables for different cards.
THURSDAY: Give each student 1 card, making sure you pass out the correct matches. Student then have to go around the room looking for the student that has their card’s match.
FRIDAY: Give students quiz on vocabulary. I recommend kahoots. Or you can give the text’s quiz to the students. You can also provide accommodations for students by letting those that need them match up the cards for their quiz while you monitor the others.
