“The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” by Ray Bradbury Writing Assignment is the type of essay your students can't copy from the internet and the type you won't mind grading (well, maybe) because it is a one page, one paragraph essay. I came up with the idea when I noticed textbook editors had "sanitized" Bradbury's story by leaving out words important to the time period; ie, "God bless you," became "Bless you" in Prentice Hall's "adapted" version of this story. This lesson plan has a chart of the discrepancies I found from Bradbury's original text to an anthology's version. This writing assignment can be used regardless of which version you read in class. Students have to defend their contention about which is better and why. A 10-point grading criteria is included at the bottom of the sheet, but if you want to include other requirements, just change it up as this is a word document.
