Do your students have a tough time translating their thoughts into well-reasoned arguments?
Do they seem to struggle to write their own essays - especially persuasive essays?
And are they still skeptical that writing is fun?
If so - then this game based unit - called The Easy Essay - is for you!
The Easy Essay is a four part unit that guides students through the writing process from beginning to end by asking them to take a stand on an issue by formulating a thesis all their own - own their own - and building it out into an eleven sentence essay using the simple, step by step Easy Essay format. Simply put, The Easy Essay format treats each sentence of an eleven sentence essay as a particular piece of a puzzle in that each sentence builds on the previous one and introduces the next one - all to provide purpose and clarity to the writing and to the reader of the writing.
And to answer the question being asked - of course.
Once students understand the purpose of each puzzle piece - sentence by sentence - their essays tend to improve almost immediately - and their own attitude towards writing begins to change as well.
The Easy Essay unit is composed of four distinct lessons - or quests - and cover these themes:
Quest 1 - The Easy Essay Format: Thesis & Conclusion
TSW identify the constituent parts of The Easy Essay Format and author an original fill in the blank thesis and conclusion that will be built out into the final form of an original persuasive essay by the end of the unit.
Quest 2 - The Easy Essay Format: Rough Draft
Using The Easy Essay Format - TSW build on the thesis and conclusion they created Quest 1 to author a rough draft of their original persuasive essay.
Quest 3 - The Easy Essay Format: Peer Edits
Using the Easy Essay format peer edit approach - TWS engage in peer editing sessions that will help them identify areas in their essays that need improvement - and strategies to improve them.
Quest 4 - The Easy Essay Format: Final Draft & Writer Reflections
Using The Easy Essay format - TWS complete the writing process by creating a final draft of their original persuasive essay - and reflecting other own writing.
To help speed and strengthen the learning curve of The Easy Essay format - this unit even features a classroom card game experience (in Quest 2 called The Easy Essay card game) that can be played over and again - either individually, in groups or as a class.
By playing the game even a few times - The Easy Essay format seems to stick, so the learning is lasting and impactful.
Eventually - students are able to use this new skill set to find their own voice as writers - no matter the genre.
In the meantime - their essays and their arguments will grow stronger and more sophisticated - which is a big win-win for teachers and students, so let the essays begin!
